Activities Program

The main club activities are day walks and take place in a large number of different areas ranging from suburban parks to the nearby mountains. Historic walks around the suburbs of Melbourne are also on offer.
Basecamps, cycling and a range of social events are also offered. Trips within Australia, overseas and locally are also undertaken periodically.

Grading of Walks

It is most important that before you consider going on any walk, particularly those graded medium or more strenuous, you should consider whether you are sufficiently fit and experienced and have the necessary equipment.

Easy  Walking on gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks. Suitable for most people. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 6 to 12 km.

Easy/Medium  Gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks with some short climbs. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 10 to 15 km.

Medium   Some of the walk not necessarily on formed tracks, with some sustained climbs (1km or more). Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Medium/Hard   As for medium but includes rougher terrain, ie. heavy scrub, rock scrambling or longer climbs or descents. Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Hard   Consistent walking in difficult terrain, rock scrambling, thick scrub, steep ups and downs, creek crossings. Experienced and fit walkers only. Walking time 6 to 10 hours, 10 to 20 km

The wonderful Deb is leading a "Fungi Forage" around Mt Macedon, supported by Lynda - details and distance to be confirmed after the recce.

Poles recommended as it can get muddy and slippery on the Mount. Bring water, morning tea, lunch and dress appropriately for the weather and the leeches.  Pack your camera/phone, a small mirror can help you take photo's under the mushroom cap and a small torch can provide extra light as fungi often hides in dark crevices.  There are likely to be leeches so suggest wearing a hat with a brim, bring preventative leech spray, or salt, tucking your trouser legs into your long socks or wearing gaiters also helps. Wear bright colours so you can easily spot leeches if they get on you.

Carpooling:  7.45am departure from KFC Greensborough - cost $15 TBC

This is the harder version of the Mt Jerusalem walk - we go up the Bundy Track to the water tank rather than up Old Kinglake road. After that it's the same - cross the road, up and over Cookson's hill, down Mount Jerusalem. The Bundy is a narrow track and quite steep in parts. Ascent is 575 and the walk is on the hard side of medium.

Carpool from Eltham Little Theatre, leaving at 8.15 so be there a few minutes before. $6 to drivers
The place we used to park in Steels Ck road is now No Parking so we'll park at the base of Mt Jeusalem track. There is limited parking here so please car pool if you can. If you can't car pool, be at the start at 8.45

These gardens near Olinda were formerly known as the Rhododendron Gardens. The walk will be an adventure trail following cryptic clues designed to test the theory that walking is good for the brain! Distance will be 6 or 12 km (see option below).

Assemble at 10:30 in the main carpark on the right of The Georgian Road just before the main entrance.

A map and the first clue will be given out after we are through the entrance building. Walkers will need to decipher the clue (collectively) and then follow it to the next hidden clue and so on to discover many of the main features of this wornderful garden. At this time, the camellias should be in full bloom and there are always other plants of interest, although it is the wrong season for rhododendron blooms.

This part of the walk is approx 6 km and should take to about 12:00 when we can have lunch. There are a few steep paths and one broken one, so poles are recommended if you use them.

Optional Extra:
If there are enough volunteers, we can then do an approx 6 km loop around the outside of the gardens, concluding with a climb up through the old Olinda Golf Course to the cars.

The walk will be deferred if the weather is too inclemement.

The walk begins alongside the oval after a few minutes and turn right onto the Koonung Creek track.  The path is macadam all the way so a bit hard under foot and very popular with cyclists.  First we will come to Wetherby/Middleborough Road and shortly after that turn left onto the footbridge, cross the freeway and continu along the south side of the freeway under Tram/Station Road and Elgar Rd.  We continue past the Elgar Park Hockey Fields and into the Koonung Linear Park wetlands.  We will take the diversion over bridge and down onto the walkway through the swamp.  The swamp hens have a technique in bending reeds.  A little further on, a bit short of Doncaster Road, we will stop in a small park for morning tea (10.45).  Then we retuned the same way

Meeting place to begin this walk, of 7-8 km, is Weerona Playground (Mel 33 B9) accessible off Research-Warrandyte Road. Meet at 0915 for a 930 start.  Some of the paths are narrow, on steep banks, and can be slippery so poles are strongly recommended.

Our walk will begin by walking towards the Yarra River and veering right onto a barely visible track (a great view of the river half way up - 8 minutes), which we will follow up the hill to Glynns Road.  We will cross Glynns Road and walk up to the water tank on top of the hill along the track just inside the fence.  We will then walk directly downhill (halfway to Ford's cottage now with restricted access) to a wide track and follow it to Laughing Waters near Caitlin's retreat.  From there will walk back up the hill a little and proceed parallel to the river to Bob's Wetlands for morning tea.  After the break we will pass the Pound Bend tunnel and follow the track along the river (up and down) on some steep tracks to our starting point at Weerona Way.

This walk was amended on 13 May.

Pilbara Exploranges Trip

This is a 22 day Exploranges Trip specifically for members for the Diamond Valley Bushwlking Club.  Cost approx $8030.  Leaving from Perth and return to Perth - highlighting the Pilbara region.

Hike in deep gorges cut by hidden springs and swim in refreshing plunge pools - two of many reasons why the Pilbara is worth taking time to explore. Famous for its iron ore deposits which lend the landscape its fiery hues, the region contains some of the world’s most ancient natural landscapes, set amongst the beautiful Hammersley Ranges in Karajini National Park. Contrast these dramatic landscapes with the tranquility of Ningaloo Reef. Here we cruise and snorkel, discovering the delights of one of the most spectacular marine parks in the world, where the coral reef is just a short swim away
